During the Moorish period the village was a farmstead of which only a few remains have been preserved. The village took part in the battles that took place during the late medieval period between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and halted the progress of the troops of the Castilian king Pedro I, The Cruel. Though besieged in 1356 by the Castilian troops of Pedro I the Cruel, the town managed to rout the troops and, in honour of this, the King of Aragon granted Penáguila the status of a Royal Town and the privilege of voting in parliament. The town was the seat of the lords of Guadalest and Alcolecha whose ancestral homes have been preserved. The town is fresh and shady and contains many elements that are worth seeing and discovering; it is a large place with many corners and details revealing various aspects of its cultural past. The town is surrounded by three rivers: the Frainos, the largest tributary of the Serpis River, the Anodrac and the Riuet which together provide this farming locality with an abundance of water with which to grow fruit and almonds. With the new Golf course soon to be started, the area should enjoy a boom time. We have a large selection of brand new villas being built around the area.

Its low number of inhabitants results from the crisis suffered by agricultural communities in the 1960s and 1970s.
